More Rogue?

If you are a regular reader here you know that I have become quite taken with my rogue. In my attempt to cram as much good stuff as I could into the build I had to give up a lot of stuff and as I play it and fall in love with it I wonder if I would like more specialized builds….

So today I am just going to do with you all something I did with Tobril last night while I cleared the nGH zone like a boss and Tobril played Neverwinter like a bitch, aka throw out ideas and see what sticks.

A bigger non-sneak attack dice based build i.e. a STR based build. Maybe something using the Acrobat Pre and a massive stick like a 12/6/2 rog/arty/monk or 12/7/1 rog/monk/ranger? Think the later has been done before but might be good.

I wouldn’t be apposed to a dwarf twf focused dps build. Maybe with ranger or fighter splashed? I could see a 12/8 or 12/6/2 build going less Int and more Str and using the mechanic PRE class to make up for the lesser skill points.

Just remembered something from Lam and dwarfs… Throw your Weight Around…. “Axes: You may use your Constitution modifier to determine the damage you deal with battle axes, dwarven waraxes, hand axes, greataxes and throwing axes.”

The 2 issues I have with my rogue now are low HP and low first number weapon dice. Could a MAX con dwarf two weapon fighting with axes handle both of these issues? Maybe????

Also if you are a long time reader you will remember how much I liked the X/9 rog/monk life I did on Samius. He had fairly good stunning fist DCs, could I make a monk/rog fist build with DCs that land in EE and still have massive amounts of sneak attack dice?

The thought of taking my current build at 20 and lessering out all the twf feats and going ranged all the time is a possibility. Doing so could make room for the rest of the bow feats I am missing hopefully making up for a slower rate of fire with damage vs GTWF… Problem with that is swapping for Assassinating, which is 90% of my fun at the moment.

Speaking of why I like the rog now vs other attempts right now hinges on being a ninja and sneaking around and then assassinating people. Could I really maximize that feeling more then I am? IDK, I am a INT/dex rog now. I can’t really go more INT then I am now and meet the prereqs for Imp Sneak Attack. Maybe if I was a Halfling… But then I would be trading even more HP out…

Other then that dwarf idea (I think a lot of people will try making that Throw your Weight Around work), I think the rest of these plans are not for me… Wonder if an axe thrower with Throw your Weight Around and whirling wrists on an Arty would work…. Never mind that.

New Dog

First thing you all need to know any and all pets in DDo are dogs. If it has 4 legs and is not a bear then it is also a dog, yes including trash mobs. If you find yourself tripped by a wolf/cat/wilderbeast the tripper is in fact a dog. Ergo the owlbear even though it has “bear” in its name is clearly a dog. Well the level 17 version anyway.

Maybe that is a good enough set up, if not rewrite the opening in the comment section.

So as I think you all can guess, I finally got a chance to try out my lvl 17 owlbear pet. No it wasn’t anything crazy amazing like let it solo its way through Litany for me, or anything like that. But we took a nice stroll through the nGH explorer zone on my rogue for about 25 mins and I have to say it was doing well enough for what that guy needs, aka a big distraction.

I set it for attack mode and it ran way head and got things started and then I was able to sneak up and finish things. I didn’t really watch the damage it took or its DPS I will say I saw a few one hit kills in the 160ish range but I don’t know if that is just it criting or if that is its normal attack numbers I was having too much fun playing assassin to really notice.

Sorry I can’t go into depth yet, but thought as I am seeing lots of feedback on the big one and not a ton on the little one that I would share this first impression. It didn’t die, it seemed to take actions as I wanted but go get agro is not hard for a hireling and it killed some stuff in the zone so I didn’t have to be the only one killing.

Will I use it in quest? Not a lot I am guessing. But I should maybe. That said I should also remember to move a copy of the Shard of summon a beholder over while it is amazing and I haven’t done that either soooooo who knows. Over all I was fairly impressed after reading all the complaints about the big boy.

I can be a Prejudice Asshole.

We all face prejudice each day, how we handle that prejudice is what makes us who we are. If your reading this then you and I most share a little judgment from someone, aka we are gamers or comic book readers or prepers or maybe all three. Over this lass weekend I saw prejudice from a few angles of view and thought I would share.

Jump to a cook out I had with my in-laws, nothing super special. Meat, cake for cake eaters and a conversation, you know a normal family meal.

In dinners past, there have been a little fun poked and the wife and I at our newer prepper mindset. But as we pulled in I started to notice green on my sister–in-law’s front porch…. Strange. Walking up I noticed a lot of fresh lettuce in a window box. And a few window boxes in a few windows with leafy things growing in them.

The wife noticed and commented with a glad you didn’t bring a salad now?

Right there I was being a prejudice ass. I didn’t think my in-laws had even that level of preparation in them. I was wrong and I continued to be wrong as later after we ate my brother in law showed me his when shit goes down carry gun and his “survival gun” an U.S. Survival AR-7. Good enough that he can bring in some food for his family if he had to, his words more or less. Still think having more then a few days of food is a better start then a gun and 10k rounds for said gun but to each their own.

BTW, the AR-7 is very nice think I need to get one for myself; .22, light weight and the ability to stow the upper and barrel into its stock getting down to about 18 inches in length.

I was floored again, have they really grown up that much? As we talked some more I gave them tips for making raised beds and offered to help them build their own greenhouse. The whole time I was thinking are these the same people that were poking fun at me a year ago for buying my shelf reliance and wanting to have a few chickens in my backyard?

Then as we moved to reading and what books we have been reading I said something like now that I have found comixology and that most of my “free time reading” as returned to comics. And the comment was made of how when my sister in-law grew up she stopped reading picture books. Which got a laugh out of my mother in-law who said there are pictures in Harry Potter. And the topic turned to how my sister in-law liked the Twilight books and we all were feeling a little superior again. Or at least I might have been.

Is there a point to this? Not really. Is this the kind of prejudice that people encounter everyday do to race, sex, or who we love, from assholes? Not even close. Just saying that for everything that makes us different there is something that makes us the same. And even I, a married white middle class man that is more or less a emotionless ass feels like sometimes people are being a little prejudice against me, maybe we all need to grow up and just handle our own shit. Do I love my in-laws any less because they think my reading comics books is childless? No. Do I think less of them for liking Twilight? Lets skip that one… ☺

DDo Lite Weekend for Me

This weekend was a little different one for me. I didn’t have super raging migraines (just the normal live with it ones ☺ ) and I wasn’t in any huge rush to do any thing really, I was just in chill mode and went with the flow.

But that somehow got me in trouble.

If you remember, a few weekends back a group of us did a TR push using a xp stone from the Otto’s box and rocketed from 1 to 20 in a weekend. Totally could have been in a day had people not needed to eat or sleep.

Anyway so those chars have been on the train back to 25. I am half dragging my feet as I am not totally in love with the Jug build but it is coming along. It is fine I am just not anymore excited to play it then any other melee build. And defiantly not more then say my rogue build…

Boy I am on a sidetrack roll this morning… SO everyone else besides the wife and myself has finished capping their stoned alts, we have taken our playtime the last few weeks and have been working on our little peoples. Meaning when I get on Saturday morning and people say they want to Web I say I will have to switch or flag real fast. Last weekend we got the drow city (Sssitewoqsdnflajf;fuckmylifeaskdan) chain cleared so all we needed was the 3 web quests. I called for the wife who was still in bed, to see if she was ready to get up… no answer. So when the team said lets just flag real fast I said sure.

We were on the last quest and almost done when the wife got out of bed. Told her a web was about 15 mins out and she was none to happy that I flagged with out her…

What?

Last I checked she was less then pleased with how her tank was playing, but then she reminded me that she had decided to get to cocoon before making a build decision. Well I point out that we can flag her this week or maybe even in a little while if she wants to web with someone else…. But the damage was done and I was an asshole the rest of the weekend.

After that web I really don’t know what else we did. Some GH flagging happened but I was trying to fall asleep in Madstone, it was like a light switch I was awake and then I wasn’t any more. When we finished I went to take a nap and the group pushed on knocking out a Tor and a FoT raid.

Then Sunday we had a little birthday cookout for a niece turning five. And then when we got home we decided to watch the Hobbit and that spilled over into watching the new Game of Thrones eps. All I got to do on Sunday was talk Grim into a few FR challenges in hopes I might be able to get a simi-good throwing star and really annoy Tobril with my starfoo.

I Love it when a Plan Comes Together

Okay no more cheesy Tv quotes, but for you that missed that last one it was from Glenn Geist on Swamp People.

So… What master plan has just started to come together? Well Mc Plunderer build is doing all the things I had hoped. Well that it should be able to do on paper anyway. It would be nice to be able to assassinate with a bow or some other ranged weapon. But being able to two for one when dual wielding is a nice trade off I guess.

But level 16 just happened for me last night and with it manyshot. You know what an extra 9d6 looks like added on to a manyshot burst? Dead things, lots and lots of dead things for as far as your draw distance will allow you to see.

And that is not using any real special bow and old Turmoil Within and some random loot gen one. I wonder if I could see about talking people that can into some non-epic house C farming for a lvl 16 Earth Bow or if I should wait until I am a little higher with the intent of making an epic version?

All I know is having the option to also be the ranged with all these Juggs and other manyshot builds running around is real nice. And being able to go Slayer Arrows at 20 with a whole lot more sneak attack dice will be amazing dips… as long as I don’t have the agro.

I already am starting to see 2 or 3 more fringe rogue builds in my head, okay maybe less fringe and more shoring up my weaknesses like the lower Hp and the terrible WILL saves.

Overall, I can really see this guy making it into my main list. Well if he stays at or near the same level of fun when playing anyway.

Who knew I loved stabbing people in the guts?

School is out and do I Have a Summer Job for you: MY Personal Plat Farmer!

I know buying plat, gear or grinding xp from strangers with real world money is wrong… but what if I make my son do it? And I just happen to give him an allowance this summer with incentives based on how much plat/gear/xp he earns me? What if I “trade” him a longer curfew this summer? You know things that don’t have real world value for my DDo desires?

Well I guess it doesn’t matter I have a short list of DDo chores he is going to be doing for me anyway if we come to some like of plat/xp/gear arrangement I guess that is between him and me… And I guess you lucky readers and the wife…

But lets say you had a little person that you could farm out some tasks for you what would they be?

Here is my list:

  • Move all epic mats to my epic mat alt and check/update the epic mat spreadsheet.
  • Sort the stored gear, Guild slotted items on alt X, items with the new augment slots on Y, Icy rit low level items on Z and so on.
  • Sort the collectibles and bound/unbound mats. Example Samius is the master crafter and gets all the Cannith mats and collectibles moved to him. All those bags should be emptied (as much as possible) fairly often and those items given to Sam.
  • Put the haggle and decon guys to work and clear that old janky doomsday gear. I was looking for some mid level items for my rogue. I found 5 banishing rapiers of different pluses and trailing powers, why? Because they were money! Just think about all the old stat items I have horded away? I don’t need any of those items any more. Hey RR +4s at level 7 were sexy, oh and lvl 11 +6s…. Now that is all janky.
  • I do have items to be ground out. I still don’t have a 3BC or sub-terrain rune arm.
  • Guild renown and Plat to be mindlessly ground, it doesn’t take a ton of skill to do the IQ solo quest until ransacked on ever character flagged for it.

Wonder if I get the boy rocking some of these things for me, how long until he tries to farm these jobs out to one of his friends…

Pew pew, Pling pling pling, Swish Thunk thunk thunk?

If a Bow goes Pew pew pew and a repeating xbow goes Pling pling pling; then a thrown weapon has to go Swish Thunk for each star, right? Seems right to me…

Oh yes by the way swapped that pesky mirthal body feat for Shuriken Expertise and picked up a normal level 1 +1 ninja star and while the damage is a little less then the bow it is more attacks per min then a bow any time manyshot is off. Feels very close to the repeater (if not slightly head) with out using any Endless Fusillade boosts with a 25ish dex and a maxed out Whirling Wrist. Sure if you need big burst damage pick up that repeater EF, swap to that bow and Manyshot then repeat step one but if the thing is not dead and you don’t want to close you can do worse then throwing a few stars around. Add in the Shiradi Champ stance proc %s and you can have a real mean toy.

Mostly for fun mind you…. But this weekend when my head was trying to talk me in to a dirt nap I tried to distract myself by having a little more fun then I maybe should have for EE quests… Ie there were lots of times I was totally ranged on my Juggernaut. Meaning other then those times when burst dps was needed my main weapon was a level one star and my Tovin’s Hammer…. I am not completely nuts…

On a none-crit hit I was getting about 45-55 points on the first number some times a little more but 2[1d2] doesn’t offer up a tone of damage range so most of that was putting my arm in to the damage. The Tovin’s helped a lot + it seems like there was always some kind of extra damage proc but still I was playing with a non-named-epic diced +1(+3 with the Arty Pre) weapon.

So clearly if I am going to keep fiddling with shuriken I will need a better toy to play with. So I do what I do when I want to find a better toy in DDo, I hit the ddowiki. Know what I found? There are 3 named shuriken 4 if you count crafting a greensteel shuriken.

BTW the plural for shuriken is shuriken…. From what I am reading making the plural the same as the single is a Japanese thing…

Anyway, other then the crafting option you have the Shadow Star, keen/deception and the Snowstar +2/Icy burst … Wow! But that is still more named weapons then the throwing Hammer….

What to do? Well I think with my options being two low level named items, crafting a Greensteel, working on an Alchemical, looking at Cannith crafting or rocking one of the 2 named items… the cheapest/best way to go is to look at using the Cannith crafting system….

I mean I just have to try and find and craftable epic blank and go +5/Holyburst and Righteous, that is the best we can cannith craft isn’t it?

Tobril said why not make a Pos/Pos Greensteel and if I don’t like it then I still have a rez clicky…

Can’t argue with his logic. I mean does 1.5[d2] vs 2[d2] make that big of a deal??? Guess I will be farming up some shards….

Unless I can find a shuriken with a red slot then shit gets real funky…

You know a Earth/Water Alchemical looks fairly solid on paper also…

National Masturbation Day

Today’s update has nothing to do with NMD, but seems like a holiday that I should throw my support behind. No this is the second time I started this update the first post I cried about how a killer migraine hit me all weekend but that was too whiney even for me so lets try topic number two: I enjoy assassinating mobs.

Oh do I like cutting mobs heads off, it is amazing. My DC right now is only 33 or so but other than a +6 item and my level ups going into Int there has not been a lot in the way of maximizing my Dc yet. This is by far the funniest build to level up since I leveled java as a druid. And I have done a pure arty (lots of fun) and Tred Java into a Jugg (fairly fun (getting better now that I am fiddling with ninja stars some.)). I think it comes from still being effective and useful at all times even if I am not a main melee dps role. Not that I couldn’t be more dps but I am doing a few different things in this build that I think will really shine in the end game even if that makes the now game harder.

But this weekend was the first time I really got to use assassinate, the wife and I were dong eyes of stone and she would be fighting like a room of trash and I would assassinate the caster and then move to the trash mob with the most HP and work my way around just sneak attacking my little heart out. Good times. Then later in the quest I was able to use my assassinate to drop the mini boss in each room when they awoke leaving us with just the elemental to clean up. Made things very nice. In the final room there was more then a few times I wished the assassinate ability would work with a bow but that is no joy.

Real fast speaking of joy, you have no idea how much I loved it when I first bluffed and then entered sneak mode to assassinate a mob that was hurting me. I was giddier then a schoolgirl. I tried to explain it to the wife, but she just didn’t see the funny. He was stabbing me, I told him I wasn’t a bad man and I would hurt him and then I cut his bitch head off when he turned his back…. So classic.

Anyway I have a meeting about maybe picking up some classes for a few months. It can be hard for me to get into something that I am not excited about. Like rapid development php environments and whatnots… Maybe pick up some new letters my title and find a different JOB where I can do more then crank away on old shit while being told I need to be the futurist but no one wants to have the birthing pains of what the future brings… Anyway this is not the time for that kind of bitching either.
