Cheif of Skullhuntering your Face

I feel that there is a super good agro deck out there and i think it plays a lot of warriors. Lets just throw cards at the wall and see what sticks.

All the cards i want to cram in to the deck are:
Gods Willing
Hero’s Downfall
Bloodsoaked Champion
Herald of Anafenza
Chief of the Edge
Mardu Skullhunter
Oreskos Swiftclaw
Tymaret, the Murder King
Pain Seer and/or Grim Haruspex
Mogis’s Marauder

Sorin, Solemn Visitor

Possibly hanging in the sideboard
Chained to the Rock
Murderous Cut
Dark Betrayal
Phyrexian Revoker
Staff of the Death Magus

So numbers/ what makes the cut?

4 Thoughtseize
2 Despise
2 Ulcerate
1 Gods Willing
4 Hero’s Downfall

4 Bloodsoaked Champion
2 Herald of Anafenza
4 Mardu Skullhunter
4 Chief of the Edge
0 Oreskos Swiftclaw
2 Tymaret, the Murder King
4 Pain Seer and/or Grim Haruspex
2 Mogis’s Marauder

3 Sorin, Solemn Visitor

22 lands
Mardu Triland
Lifegain lands

Idk, i will say i had a more controlling version of this deck and it was very good.  Ideally this deck would play a 1 drop, followed up with a Skullhunter or 2 some other discard spell, then lay on the beats while keeping the field clear thanks to suicide guys and light removal/discard combo. I don’t know if it is right for the meta atm. But after watching a ton of Abzan decks win out over the last two weekends i am leaning towards yes as long as you keep 4 Dark Betrayals in the sideboard and keep the pressure up.

Magical Monday 10.14.14

One of the decks that both my kid and I had a lot of fun and/or success with was that tasty little Black/Red Young Pyro Control deck that I wrote about a while back. It was so good in the last standard that I often thought that I would port some variation of it to modern. But tonight I want to look at updating this masterpiece.

The old list more or less:
4 Young Pyo
4 Pain Seer
4 Nivmagus Elemental
2 Tymaret, the Murder King

4 Duress
4 Thoughtseize
3 Spite of Mogis
2 Bile Blight
3 Doom Blade
2 hero’s downfall
4 Lightning Strike
4 Mizzium Mortars

Khan Standard, like always here is the list of cards that make my maybe list.

Magma Spray
Bile Blight
Lightning Strike
Magma Jet
Bloodsoaked Champ
Monastery Swiftspear
Mardu Skullhunter
Pain Seer
Goblin Rabblemaster
Hero’s Downfall
Howl of the Horde

Lets look at some of the standout cards.
Thoughtseize and Despise are great right now. I think that Despise is ever better then Duress was in last year’s standard.
Goblinslide is not unlike a harder to kill if harder to get guys from Young Pyo.
Monastery Swiftspear and Bloodsoaked C is not unlike Nivmagus Elemental.
And if there is ever a deck that would make Howl of the Horde good this might be it.

So lets crunch some numbers.
4 Despise
2 Magma Spray
2 Ulcerate
4 Lightning Strike
4 Magma Jet
2 Bloodsoaked Champ
4 Mardu Skullhunter
4 Pain Seer
4 Goblin Rabblemaster
2 Goblinslide
2 Howl of the Horde
22 lands
4 Bloodstained Mire
4 Temple of Malice
2 Urborg
3 Mana Confluence
5 Swamp
4 Mountain
I do think I want the Bloodfell Caves but I really need as many lands as possible to come into play untapped but the life might just be needed.
So much potential.

Honest Magic Update

I am about to be super honest with you all. I am not the most comfortable with this so be gentle.

The core of my standard deck is the following:

4 Mystic
4 Kiora’s Follower
1 Caryatid/rattlesnake (think i like Caryatid more)
2 Courser
4 Yisan
1 Reclamation Sage
1 Hornet Nest
1 Nylea
1 Nylea’s Disciple
2 Polukranos
4 Prophet of Kruphix
1 Arbor Colossus
(currently in 1 Keranos)
1 Hornet Queen
1 Soul of New Phyrexia

1 Bow of Nylea
2 Cords

Various lands

Cards that our out are:
1 Burring Tree
1 Scavenging Ooze
1 Izzet Staticaster
1 Prime Speaker

So my issues post rotation are with the lost of Shock lands and losing those 4 key cards can i fix my tool box for the new standard?

So here are my thoughts for you to destroy or offer your advice.

1, The mana will be the key to new standard.
2, There are 3 or 4 stupid fast decks in the format that we can expect to crush the field, we can’t loose to fast agro…
3, Sagu Mauler is the finisher we want.

Okay so lets look at the options.

Stay Red splash.

I think that red is the strongest against fighting against the agro decks. Circle of Flame is a beating but that is a sideboard card at best right? And who is going to argue with Savage Knuckleblade? Guy is a house.

But are there enough depth for us?

The first gut feeling go Black.

Black gives us sudo card advantage with Hythonia the Cruel and Pharika. Creature wraths are super powerful. And turning dead cards in to sudo removal spells is just good. Black also gives us a great 1 drop in Cruel Sadist and another amazing card advantage in Soul of Innistrad.

But then there is the White option.

Herald of Anafenza in the other killer 1 drop in the format. And it just compounds with what my deck wants to do. How many times can i use it a turn? How is Dauntless River Marshal or Fleecemane Lion as our 2 drop. And Soul of Theros is another house when it comes to a surprise Alpha.

So thoughts? Help? For the first time in a while i am not sure what to do.

Magical Monday 8.11.14

My son is a life gain junky. No really. He would rather gain some amount of life every turn then deal some of damage every turn. So with that i want to give him a way to gain life and maybe win once and a while.

This is what i came up with.

4 Soulmender

4 Nyx-Fleece Ram
4 Ajani’s Pridemate
4 Oreskos Sun Guide
4 Generator Servant

2 of Soul of Theros/Archangel of Thune

4 Soul Bonds
4 Return to the Ranks
4 Raise the Alarm

2 Lightning Volley
2 Purphoros

22 lands

Now i know what you are thinking…. WTF mate? Life gain is just bad, friends don’t let friend’s sons play life gain.

Well he is going to do it anyway, so maybe if i can get him to have “his life gain deck” he can stop drafting life gain so highly and maybe just maybe he will take the Cone of Flame over Congregate pick one pack one….

Everything costs 2 or less other then the 2 of Soul of Theros/Archangel of Thune and the other surprise finishers… Archangel is real nice and other than it is about to rotate out i think he would be very happy with it in this deck. But he is very weird about wanting to build for post rotation which is silly in my eyes as once the rotation hits there just might be a much better deck for him.

Purphoros is great in any deck that has lots of cheep men entering play. Just so happens if all these little dudes croak Return to the Ranks just picks them back up. Casting them from your hand or saving them with a Return to the Ranks triggers Soul Bonds which makes even more guys.

And i just wanted to try something insane like Lightning Volley.

Now we could tweak this a hair and cut the Oreskos Sun Guides which we normally like because we can just go nuts with them if they die we can just rebuy them. But if we do cut them we can add 2 lands and two Heliods…

All the value…

Generator Servants are both cheep men to play and a real kick in the nuts if you go t2 Soul Bond t3 Servant+tokan t4 Soul of Theros/Archangel of Thune.

Okay time to bounce.

Gencon is this week so i might or might not have something while i am out and or the Magic Monday might have to wait until Tuesday again..

Ps: More my style but along these same lines.

4 Hopeful Eidolon
4 Nyx-Fleece Ram
4 Underworld Coinsmith
4 Baleful Eidolon
2 Hero of Iroas
2 Gnawing Zombie
4 Pack Rat
4 Grim Guardian
2 of Soul of Theros/Archangel of Thune
4 Soul Bonds
4 Return to the Ranks

22 lands
