Magic Monday 4.6.15

Here is my sealed deck from the Pre release, i am not sure how well you can see it but i did a little report last update. But now that i have a few more limited games under my belt i want to say Echoes of the Kin Tree, is even better then i thought in limited. A+

This is my 4-0 draft deck from the Store v Store event this last weekend.

I went in to this draft wanting to be closer to control then not. With that in mind i started my draft with a Vulturous Aven then double Bathe in Dragonfireand a Gravecaller then i waffled in to some blue cards then settled on a nice black/red list. Pack 2 i spiked the regent, was passed the raptor and a ton of great blue cards but i was able to stay on track with only a few blue cards that i considered slashing for, but i couldn’t get enough fixing to make it happen. 😦

Opening that Siege,in the third pack, was a real boon. Angler and a few pick ups made the final list but i cut a lot of good cards from the other store players.

Overall the Shop did real well, with Standard being the closest with us winning by 6 points. While Draft and Commander was mostly a blow out.

Okay lets look at some standard ideas

I saw a real good aggressive Assault Formation list. It was kinda close to the list i have been playing with but it looked real good and had some teck i didn’t think about: Kruphix’s Insight.

Kruphix’s Insight, is so good that i am going to add some to my list for sure.

This list is laid out a little different then i normally would. I have a small tutor package and reanimate package. I could see more silver bullet package but i would leave that in the sideboard and try to bank on people not knowing what is up for game one then go adjust as needed.

Now the list i saw this weekend was just white/green with 8 of the 0/4 one drops and was all in on game one on the Assault Formation. But i really like the balance of control and midrange.

Resolutions 2015

Welcome back everyone. Good to be back after the new year and all the hoot’nanny that goes along with it. I want to start off by wishing everyone a good new year for the coming weeks and whatnots.

Long time readers know that every year i do a little review of last years goals and then set some new ones that i try and check in with midway through the year as to try and keep them on track. So lets began the year in review.

1, Be more forgiving in game. Wow, DDo was a huge part of my world at the start of the year last year. Now i barely play but i am happy to say something flipped in me and i am fairly forgiving of others mistakes as well as my own. Not real sure when that happened but i am glad.

2, Gencon and weight loss. So in January i was reeling from suddenly not being employed and i let it get to me in a bad way. A large part of that was a hit to my over all health mostly at due to my large belly. And i want to say i was doing well again. Or at least better. Then Remmie had his run in with the car and MY health was no longer an issue. But i could still fast walk from one side of the con to the other and not be super winded and that was my goal.

3, Education. Can’t say expanding my edu has been a huge focus. I mean i have been learning a lot of things in lots of areas but mastering a topic hasn’t happened. But i can always do more and i should.

4, Podcasting…. So i did some pods. I can’t help being on break, right?

5, The pen and paper module, well i did make some strides in that area. I did get to run it once this year with a trusted test group and while i think we added some things that made it less then amazing it was fun and showed me where my problems are. Now i just need to get them fixed and fleshed out.

Okay so with those in mind, i need to set some goals.

1, Be kinder. I am not a nice guy. Nor am i intentionally mean. But what is the difference between some one that is unintentionally mean and some one that is? Not a lot right? I have a lot of pain and baggage from my past that touches me every day every minute and it colors how i see the world. About once a month my wife gets her fill of my shit that i don’t even know that is bothering her and calls me on it. And it would be nice if she didn’t have to call me out so often.

2, Write more. I started another project that might if it goes well, change the way my family lives. It is risky but comes with great rewards. And instead burning all my free time on bullshit i should try and write more. I mean i have a hour or so each night before finally mentally chilling out i could spend some of that time sharing.

3, Play more. More DDo, more Magic, more Pokemon, more everything. To do all of that i need to better handle my time. there is 24 hours a day and if i spend 7 of them asleep and 15 of them working i have 2 hours somewhere for other things. I just need to get those 2 hours in a place where they can be better spent.

4, Try out the pro’s lists. I am not a deck copier. Sometimes i think i would get better results if i was. So i want to try a few “pro” lists and see if my own desire to build my own deck is holding me back or if it is my play skill.

5, Show Profit. My other other job is at my local game store, The Arena. I have been working as the Community Manager there for a few months now and the turnouts for a lot of our different tournaments/events have grown but sales have not grown by enough to say i am very profitable. And i both love this job and want to see my shop grow because they are my friends/my shop. So i need to start to show larger payoffs at the end of the day and i think that will happen as long as i keep giving it my all.

Bonus, Get my level 1. In Magic the Gathering, judges are a tournament resource like any other and in my area we need more of that resource. I have been working with a couple of guys to get them their lvl 1 judge and one of them did last weekend and i could not be more proud. But just like how i haven’t actually played in the last few larger tournaments to spend my time running said tournament. I didn’t want to over work the judge we were able to bring in to help us out with out event.

There we go, six simple to say hard to do goals. Plus the standard ones of getting back on the healthy track and more Edu…

Magical (super late) Monday 10.27.14

Sorry for the late post tonight but things are the nuts right now. The boy had his 15th bday on the 27th so that kept me away from the keys. Also I started a new job in addition to my other jobs of the Community Manager/Web guy for my local card shop.

I started this last Saturday (aka 3 days ago) so I have been giving it 110% of my time trying to get a website up and running, fixing things like Goggle’s info and getting the other Social Media pages in order. I still need to get about 5 more pages of content ready to go just to cover the basic website. And I need to make some phone calls to get some much needed traction with some of the game stores in the surrounding area. Most of them have next to no web presence and one of the things we are offering is allowing those stores to create a Goggle calendar and I will add those to our calender we are publishing on our site. More events everyone is more fun for all. And it wouldn’t hurt to have them go to our site and see our events when they go to look at their local shop events. 🙂

So with that in mind lets talk about actual magic for a moment.

There is a SCG Super IQ this weekend in Witcha, and I got a slew of players planing to get out and battle for glory. And they all seem to want my thoughts on their builds. I am honored to be one of those people that others can go to for to for advice.

Some of my personal thoughts on standard at the moment are as follows.

3 color control decks are not great right now, namely, Esper control. I personally feel that wanting a BB spell on 2 a 1UU spell on 3 and a 4WW spell on 6 is real hard on the mana. And I just don’t like it.

Agro decks on the other hand are sweet and the complex/ painful mana base can do real work.

Oh and yes I am really impressed with the boss sligh like decks that are rocking some events right now.

But there is still lots of room for rogue decks, my own bluemud deck is coming along nicely if I do say so myself. I am tempted to try and go Jeski Mud but I am unsure if that level of out of the box thinking is really needed. But that is the list I have for you all tonight.

Think everyone knows what one spell i would cast in “real live” if i could, Mordenkainen’s Magnificent Mansion. Winning! But what if i could cast a few other spells that more aligned with my real word needs? I don’t really need the power to kill with a word, but i can think of a few helpful PowerWerds i think we can all get behind.

PowerWerd: Flu, When you don’t want to kill someone but it would be great if they were just sick for a few days mostly to get them the hell out of your way.

PowerWerd: Diarrhea, see above but add in a little RIGHT THE FUCK NOW!

Day 7, The Lesson of the Day.

Homework first today.

7.1 Are some job markets more secure then others?

First response was sure, but then i started to think about it and think i want to say not really. Everything can change at any time, right?

7.2, What are the best places to look for new opportunities?

According to this chapter, friends and family are the two groups with the highest percentage of landing a job, other then the walk-ins IE fast food and retail shops looking for warm bodies.

7.3, What are the biggest mistakes i have made in looking for a new job?

I feel that my loyalty has held me back, IE not looking or taking advantage of an opportunity when was given to me because i was already happily employed and i think I can be too honest for my own good during the interview process.

7.4, How do i feel about promoting myself?

Like to think i do a fair job of selling myself. But when you are this amazing it is hard not to share, right?

7.5, How do you know when to change careers?

I don’t know. My signs in the past have been when i was told there is no more for you hear other then doing what you are doing. I like to keep moving up both in salary and challenges.

7.6,  How should we apple the principles in Colossians 3:23-24 as workers in this time?

First of all here is Colossians 3:23-24: Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. 

I think this means give it your all everyday. While there are rewards now for doing a good job they are secondary to the rewards for doing a good job in the next life.

Well some of you have found out or remembered or got a social media notice that today is my birthday. I want to thank you all for the well wishes.

I have taken a half day and work and I am about to rock some Ddo until it cools off a little then dinner with the wife and some work in the garden and then back to Ddo to round out my day.

Good times are about to be had.

13 Years and Counting

Sorry about missing yesterday’s post. I will see what I can do to make it up this week sometime, but today is a busy one. Today is the actual day of my 13th wedding anniversary.

WAIT, it is my 14th wedding anniversary. Oh my… I can’t count or do simple maths…

Wow….

It hasn’t always been easy, but more often then not it has been good times. To anyone out there that might wonder if I am really the ass I seem to be and the answer is yep. But somehow I manage to keep her around. I often tell her is foolish to put up with me, but I am glad she does.

Okay if you want a DDO theme post I need to get some things done and find an idea to start with.
